A new breed of 4G phones

A new breed of 4G phones

AT&T Mobility and Sprint Nextel unveiled some of the first smartphones that will tap into their new, even faster fourth-generation networks.Chief executives for AT&T Mobility and Sprint Nextel, speaking at the CTIA wireless-industry trade show on Tuesday, took potshots at each other in their respective keynote speeches. But wait, Sprint has been talking about its 4G network since launching one in 2008 followed by its premier phone, HTC’s Evo 4G, in 2010.

And AT&T began adding “4G” to the names of many of its smartphones early last year.Sprint has come out as the most vocal opponent of AT&T’s proposal to acquire T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom. After the U.S. government sued to block the merger, Sprint, the third-largest U.S. carrier by subscribers, also filed a federal lawsuit last month, calling it anti-competitive and harmful to consumers. That phone will soon be outdated.

Now, two of the largest U.S. cellular carriers are ramping up yet another 4G system. They will have LTE, or Long-term Evolution, to compete with the one Verizon Wireless launched more than a year ago.AT&T continues to promote the proposed transaction as one that will create jobs and improve cellular service for customers.T-Mobile USA says it has 4G, which is similar to AT&T’s old 4G, but the carrier has not talked about plans for 4G LTE deployment. (Get all that?)

One entire wing of this year’s show, the 80,000-square-foot iLounge, is devoted to showcasing add-ons for Apple’s iGizmo universe. Exhibit space there sold out in record time: two hours. At many of the large CES exhibits, 4G was pervasive. For example, a station at the entrance to LG’s booth displaying a row of phones was called True LTE Expert.Sprint announced three new devices at CES: a portable wireless hotspot, a Samsung phone made from recycled materials, and the Galaxy Nexus from Samsung and Google.

Sprint’s new 4G LTE network is expected to match its older, slower 4G network by the end of this year, Steve Elfman, the carrier’s network operations president, said in an interview. Claims from insurance and technology companies are also listed on the controller’s office website. IBM reported that it owes Jobs $21.45 in stock and another mysterious property listed as costing $14.30. The company will stop selling devices that support its old 4G around that same time, and it will turn off access to that network in 2015.

AT&T’s mobile broadband traffic

AT&T’s mobile broadband traffic

LTE is theoretically capable of delivering speeds of 73 megabits per second, faster than the 42 Mbps that HSPA+ could potentially deliver. Verizon’s LTE network, for instance, is being branded as 4G-LTE. ATT is the biggest rip off artists in the world and they get away with it. Or there rediculas contract you sigh that says you have no rights in disputing a bill they send you. They call it Rbitrary rights you sigh ned when you signed the contract.

Or how about this you get new service, one of your phones is stolen 34 days later and they say well its to soon to let you buy another phone because you dont quily for the upgrade yet. It was a IPhone 4 and thats between me and Apple. But thats not the point. I was told to find a old sim card and they could activate it to a old phone if I had one. BS Rip you off and they laugh all the way to the bank. The old AT&T thrived on causing confusion for customers.

The “new” AT&T acts much the same. That way, you are never entirely certain what you’re supposed to get for what price. Very much like air fares. Regarding the proposed AT&T purchase of T-Mobile, I don’t believe for a second that T-Mobile’s aggressive low pricing will survive any longer than absolutely legally necessary. Welcome back to the world of Ma “You’ll get only what we decide to give you” Bell. And unlike HSPA+, LTE is technically a 4G wireless technology.

For those of you that don’t know SBC the company that bought/merged all of AT&T back together again is out of Texas. Its their back yard, it would be kinda odd not to roll out the new toys in your own state. Also the markets are also home to a few little companies like Texas Instruments (Think all DLP Projectors in the movie theaters), Dell, AMR (American Airlines) and so on. Its also where Neiman Marcus is based out of, so there must be a lot of wealthy people out there.

Rather it be through putting an extra fee of a $1.00 or by lying and saying you used the Directory assistance when you did not and charging for that.Adding one more bit of confusion to this kerfuffle, AT&T’s current 4G HSPA+ network has the capability for speeds matching T-Mobile’s 5-12 Mbps — but that capability hasn’t been turned on yet. The company said it has “aggressive plans” to install the enhanced backhaul needed to enable those kind of speeds, which should be available for about two-thirds of AT&T’s mobile broadband traffic by the end of the year.

Apply your iPad to work

Apply your iPad to work

Proview is a manufacturer of flatscreens which unsuccessfully launched a tablet called IPAD in 2000, registering the trademark in many countries around the world. Then take it seriously: Make an investment in these add-ons and get down to business. In 2006, Proview Electronics, which shares a parent company with Proview Technology, sold Apple use of the IPAD name, but whether or not that deal included China is debated by the two companies.

Apple sued Proview Technology, seeking the court’s recognition that it is in fact the owner of the patents, but said suit was rejected by the Shenzhen Intermediate People’s Court on Tuesday. In a statement, the court said any claims Apple had secured on the trademark only applied to Proview’s Taiwan subsidiary, not the Shenzen-based Proview Technology. An iPad stuffed with videos and other downtime fun may not have space for important work files.

Business computing inevitably means running across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Apple can still appeal the decision, but in the meantime, it faces suits from Proview Technology that seek to ban the sale of iPads in Shenzhen and Huizhou, two cities in southern China. Proview is seeking injunctions in those two cities first, with the intent of pursuing similar blocks country-wide should those rulings go in its favor. The hearing for the Shenzhen case begins on Dec. 30.

Don’t they understand that this is the kind of thing that people actually DON’T like technology for? There is nothing CASUAL about face recognition. Google should smarten up & just get into the gaming portion of technology. Make a game system that allows people to get all of the latest Google apps but also plays the latest games. That way they can incorporate everything that X-Box is working on with webTV and also connect all of their other products. They can kick rocks with this recognition though.

No business gets done on a dead battery. How to use their iPhones, iTunes and Apple TV, watching and listening to music and movies without me helping them; Apple is doing something right … Jobs might not be around, but his vision will last for the next 5, 10 years … Apple’s iPad will put laptops and notebooks to rest, Apple TV will revolutionize cable tv and entertainment and computing will belong to Apple for decades to come!

Apple’s e-book ‘cartel’

Apple’s e-book ‘cartel’

A revenue chart for the quarter would look very different, with Apple soaking up nearly all the profit there is to be made selling tablet computers these days. See here for how Amazon will “vaporize” the market for everyone but Apple.Apple was more that two years late to the e-book market. Amazon had launched the Kindle in November 2007 and was selling untold numbers of e-books for $9.99 apiece. Together, according to an earlier IBM study, the two devices accounted for 10.2% of Black Friday’s online retail traffic.

According to a class action suit filed in the US District Court for the Northern District of California by the Hagens Berman litigation group, the booksellers were “terrified” by the heavily discounted e-book price structure — which lowered the perceived value of printed books — and were looking for a way to force Amazon to raise its prices. If one publisher acted alone to try and raise prices for its titles, that publisher would risk immediately losing a substantial (and growing) volume of sales.

The language of the European Commission’s press release Tuesday announcing the start of a formal antitrust investigation of Apple (AAPL) and five major book publishers doesn’t address the obvious question: If Amazon (AMZN) is the 500-lbs. gorilla in the e-book trade, why has Apple’s much smaller iBookstore been targeted? The answer lies in a deal that Steve Jobs cut with the five publishers named in the probe shortly before the iPad press conference in January 2010, when he announced the formation of the iBookstore.

“Fortunately for the publishers,” according to Steve Berman, Hagens Berman’s lawyer, “they had a co-conspirator as terrified as they were over Amazon’s popularity and pricing structure, and that was Apple.”Given Amazon’s first-mover advantage and ever growing installed user base, publishers knew that no single publisher could slow down Amazon and unilaterally force an increase in eBook retail prices. On Nov 10., the Department of Education’s IT department slammed on the brakes.

Not wanting to risk a significant loss of sales in the fastest growing market (eBook sales), the publishers named as defendants (“Publisher Defendants”) solved this problem through coordinating between themselves (and Apple) to force Amazon to abandon its pro-consumer pricing.Under the Publisher Defendants’ new pricing model, known as the “Agency model”, the Publisher Defendants have restrained trade by coordinating their pricing to directly set retail prices higher than had existed in the previously competitive market.

Black friday of apple Amazon

Black friday of apple Amazon

Apple’s retail stores had their biggest sales day of all time, according to published reports.Hot-selling gadgets by Apple and Amazon appeared to drive tech sales on what, by all accounts, was a massive Black Friday.Ma Bell’s plan to buy T-Mobile may still technically be on life support. But make no mistake, AT&T’s stock looks pretty dead.AT&T (T, Fortune 500) announced last week that it is temporarily pulling its application for merger approval before the Federal Communications Commission.

9to5 Mac, an Apple-oriented blog, quoted an unnamed “source inside Apple Retail,” saying that the company had predicted sales four-times bigger than normal and topped that mark by 7 p.m.That move comes as the FCC and Department of Justice have both raised questions about the deal.iPad and Macbook Air sales were “exceptionally strong,” according to the source, who gave the blog a copy of an Apple Store inventory report.

Ma Bell also last week said it was prepared to take a $4 billion accounting charge in the fourth quarter to cover the required break-up fee payment to T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom if the merger falls apart.Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster counted sales in an Apple Store (just as he’s done every year since 2008), reporting that iPads and Macs were leaving the store at a rate of 14.8 and 10.1 per hour, respectively. That’s up from 8.8 and 8.2 per hour last year, according to his count.

If AT&T has to pull the plug on the deal — leaving that pretty T-Mobile spokesgirl looking for another corporate gentleman caller (paging Sprint (S, Fortune 500)!) — it may be tougher for Ma Bell to compete as effectively with its top rival Verizon (VZ, Fortune 500). Fortune’s Phillip Elmer-Dewitt noted his findings, as well as a separate Deutsche Bank analysis in which 75 percent of Apple Stores surveyed said they’d sold out of the iPhone 4S by the end of the day Friday.

But analysts said that as long as AT&T keeps paying that big, fat dividend, investors may not care. AT&T’s annual dividend is $1.72 a share. That works out to a yield of nearly 6.2%. Apple tends to avoid discounting its products, but this year offered some deals on Black Friday.Meanwhile, the Kindle Fire tablet — which may become the strongest challenger yet to Apple’s iPad — led the way for a big day for Amazon.Apple, Amazon lead big tech Black Friday.

Apple:AT&T wins for data speed, Verizon for call reliability

The iPhone 4S is available on three major carriers, leaving potential buyers to wonder whether AT&T, Verizon or Sprint is the better network choice.Comcast is on track to begin offering live television to subscribers’ iPads as long as they stay near their home cable boxes, executives for the cable giant said in interviews.Apple is a powerhouse of ingenuity, patenting ideas as soon as an engineer can scratch them down on paper (or iPad).

Around three dozen Apple patents made their way through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week alone. Here we share three of the most notable — one helps prevent cracked cover glass, another would deliver power to multiple devices with just a single adapter, and a third is a far-reaching location-based services patent that could keep Apple’s competitors on their toes.First off, Apple has come up with a solution for keeping the glass on the back of your iDevice from breaking in the event of a fall.

Pricing plans aside, carrier quality is a significant factor in anyone’s purchasing decision, and now consumers have hard data to help them choose: A just-released study reports AT&T is tops for fast data speeds, while Verizon is the most reliable when it comes to making phone calls.Obviously, the simplest solution would be to avoid glass screens altogether, but if glass is going to stay, it should be made more resilient. The average dropped-call rate for the entire mobile industry is 1.4 percent.

The tests found that Verizon dropped calls 2.1 percent of the time, while AT&T dropped 2.8 percent of calls and Sprint lost 3.7 percent of calls. Although Sprint dropped the most calls, it had the highest call quality on the uplink (outbound calls), while AT&T had the best downlink call quality (inbound calls). The original iPhone launched exclusively with AT&T, which was the sole carrier of the iPhone until Apple announced that Verizon would also begin carrying the iPhone 4 in January 2011.

With regard to maximum data speeds, AT&T led the pack at 6,047Kbps, with Verizon a distant second at 2,371Kbps, and Sprint crawling in last with only 1,767Kbps. It’s unclear, however, exactly where Metrico tested data bandwidth, and as any iPhone-toting San Francisco resident will tell you, data quality can be terrible in areas with high concentrations of tech geeks.Prior to the launch of the iPhone 4S, rumors swirled that the phone would land on Sprint, and ultimately proved true. Of the three carriers, Sprint is the only one that provides a true unlimited data plan.

Apple’s toxin-free devices

Filed under: Computer, electronics, social media

Apple’s toxin-free devices

In its latest report, Greenpeace continues to hammer Apple for not disclosing comprehensive statements about future reductions in greenhouse gas emissions or having specific public policy statements about energy and climate. (This is despite Greenpeace’s claims that its criteria have changed to focus more on actions than words.) Greenpeace’s latest “Guide to Greener Electronics” was released on Wednesday, ranking Apple in fourth place among several of its consumer electronics peers.

Apple’s efforts have garnered some faint praise from Greenpeace. Last year, the organization awarded Apple four gold stars for eliminating PVC and BFR from its products. In the latest guide, Greenpeace also praised Apple for its leadership in product efficiency and voluntary recycling efforts. For instance, two years ago, energy consumption by its products amounted to 53 percent of the company’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Apple allows some of its engineers to test prototypes of its upcoming gadgets out in the wild. But it also takes serious precautions with those prototypes.Apple will “ugly-up” the casing with prototype material. If your holding an ugly prototype from from Apple, “usually that’s a good tip off that there’s a prettier version that actually exists and they went back in and made it ugly so you can’t enjoy it.”Greenpeace may not like that the company doesn’t disclose specific future plans or policy positions.

Of course, investors expect the company’s growth to be driven by the iPhone AND the iPad. If the iPad is slowing down after less than two years, and just as competition starts to heat up, it could be a problem.Speaking of record growth, Apple noted that its rate of increase of greenhouse gas emissions is far lower than its sales growth. Since 2008, Apple’s sales volume has increased 74 percent, while emissions only increased 57 percent.

Dell and HP continue to outscore Apple in Greenpeace’s rankings, largely based on policy statements and stated goals. It’s worth considering that both companies are responsible for nearly a third of the PCs shipped globally and half of PCs shipped domestically. If both companies were to design products with greater efficiency, use more recyclable materials, and eliminate chlorine, bromine, mercury, and arsenic from their products, they would have a far greater overall impact on the environment than Apple currently does.

Records for the quarter of Apple

Records for the quarter of Apple

Apple said it sold more than 17 million iPhones in the past quarter, falling short of the previous two quarters’ sales figures, as some consumers held out in anticipation of the new iPhone 4S. That’s still impressive, however, considering the iPhone 4 had already been on sale for more than a year during the past quarter. Apple said Monday that it had already sold 4 million iPhone 4S devices in the first weekend of sales.

In the past three months, Apple set new sales and profit records for the quarter and wrapped up a fiscal year in which it blew past the $100 billion mark. It sold an all-time record number of Macs and iPads. It sounds strange, but this is what a bad quarter for Apple looks like.Despite those records, Apple’s revenue and earnings this quarter fell far short of Wall Street’s forecasts. It maybe a little bit disapponit.Apple sales top $100 billion, but fall short of estimates

Over the weekend, the company sold more than twice the 1.7 million iPhone 4s that it sold during last year’s opening weekend, though the numbers are a bit skewed: This year’s iPhone was simultaneously launched in the United States, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom, while last year’s launch did not include Australia and Canada.

Those numbers disappointed investors expecting more, and shares of Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500) fell 7% after hours. Here’s a consolation prize: Apple again edged out Exxon Mobil (XOM, Fortune 500) in the tight race to be the stock market’s most valuable company in the world.

However, the world has already witnessed a turn over by the time iPhone 4S lauched. It’s just an iPhone sales slowdown, which can’t be THAT surprising as people waited for the iPhone 5, err, 4S. Mac & iPad sales solidApple sells record 4 million iPhones. Can the new series of Apple mobile break record again? Let’s look forward.

Richard refers in an interview on unspecified people (probably from the Apple Corporation, or a supplier) and says: “If you believe what they told us, then the iPhone on 15 5 October come on the market. ” About technical intricacies, however, he gave no information. It is likely that the iPhone will have a five 8-megapixel camera – this appeared some time ago on a photo that shows a plate of sushi and indicate the EXIF data on an iPhone. Also likely to implement a dual-core processor A5 be as good as safe and as far as the operating system, so in all likelihood iOS 5 is used. The display is expected compared to the iPhone 4 be slightly larger and have a diagonal in the new edition of 4 inches – These tended to be a guess. It is also not yet sure whether the new iPhone support the LTE is fast or not. If that is too expensive for iPhone 5 release, in any case can resort to a cheaper alternative – Finally, Apple also plans to introduce a “semi-successor”, namely the iPhone 4S.
